2017 is flying by, and we are quickly approaching Cupid’s time to shine. Check out our carefully curated Valentine’s Day playlist! Every season has something romantic about it, but no season is as blatantly full of love as February and Valentine’s Day. It’s the perfect time of year to listen to all of the music we typically deem “cheesy” or “cliche.” To celebrate, I thought I’d share some of my all-time favorite songs about love:
1. LOVE by Nat King Cole
My first experience with this song was in the 1998 movie “The Parent Trap” (I was only 4 years old, holy moly) and I haven’t stopped loving it since. It was definitely my Myspace profile song at one point. This song is a classic, and will always have a spot on any romantic playlist of mine.
2. My Funny Valentine by Frank Sinatra
This is another one of those classic songs that will never get old. I couldn’t have a Valentine’s playlist without including Sinatra, and it’s absolutely perfect that he has a song specifically about his very own valentine. This song makes me want to fall in love every time I hear it.
3. Love on Top by Beyonce
I love Queen B unashamedly. I have nothing but respect for her as a musician, and this is one of my favorites by her. It’s such a sweet song about love, and also has FOUR key changes–that’s right, count ’em: FOUR–so it has rightfully earned its spot on this list.
4. I’ve Got My Love To Keep Me Warm by Bing Crosby
Being a Texas girl, this song is harder for me to relate to, because I know absolutely nothing about snowstorms (it’s February and 80 degrees here right now), but I love listening to this song and picturing myself by a fireplace with someone I love. I can’t think of a more romantic setting.
5. When I Fall In Love by Nat King Cole
As you can tell, my love for Nat King Cole knows no bounds. If I could, I would dedicate this entire playlist to his songs, but I’ll limit myself to two. This song is so sweet it brings me to tears, and I can’t imagine having a Valentine’s Day without listening to it.
6. ILYSB (2017 Release) by LANY
This song is brand new and I LOVE IT. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing LANY live, and although the lyrics may not contain Sinatra-level romance, their songs are so fun, and so relatable. This is definitely a love song catered to millennials, and I can only imagine how many of my friends will include it on their wedding playlists.
7. Love Someone by Jason Mraz
In the 8th grade, my very first boyfriend and I decided I’m Yours by Jason Mraz was “our song” (barf, I know) but thankfully, that introduced me to more of his music, which I love. I think this song perfectly illustrates how you feel when you’re in love.
8. God Only Knows by The Beach Boys
Let’s be honest here, who doesn’t love The Beach Boys? It’s the end credit song that plays in Love Actually, one of my favorite rom-coms, and I will never not cry during the final airport scene. This song would be on my perfect light-hearted Valentine’s Day soundtrack.
9. Rhythm of Love by The Plain White T’s
This song was HUGE during my sophomore year of high school. It was in a promo commercial for Parenthood and the credit song for No Strings Attached, so basically every high-school couple circa 2010 put themselves into this song. Despite bringing up embarrassing memories of what it was like to be 16 and “in love,” this song is still a total Valentine’s Day banger.
10. Can’t Help Falling In Love by Ingrid Michaelson
To conclude this list, I’d like to include this Elvis classic that was beautifully re-done by Ingrid Michaelson. It’s simplicity is breathtaking, and her voice sounds so lovely over the solo piano. It’s a great first date, first kiss, first dance, first anything song. Press play, close your eyes, and let this one soak into your heart.
I hope you enjoy all of these songs as much as I do, and I wish you all of the love you can get this Valentine’s Day!
Cheers, and happy romancing! -Abigail
